This little essay appeared in a magazine, grew footnotes for a scholarly journal, and finally became a chapter in a book.  It stirred enough interest to put me on a radio show where I was kept overtime for two more hours to field calls from listeners.  And a reader of the piece in its footnote version used the essay as the basis for a doctoral dissertation.
