Introduction

The object of publishing “Warlord” was to advertise the book Harvesting Pa Chay’s Wheat. It was scheduled for publication just a few months away. The article got more attention than I had hoped for. Some of those I’d interviewed for inside information on the Secret War suddenly received death threats. I was threatened too. The message was clear. Cancel publication of the book. The book wasn’t cancelled. It was delayed. To protect the many Hmong I’d interviewed, I removed their names from the book’s notes and made them anonymous sources. The FBI helped by rattling sabers to make the threats at least go underground. When the book was finally published, I was slightly paranoid when seeing someone I didn’t know. Especially someone lingering around my ranch. It is isolated. An ideal place for a hit and quick getaway. I received many invitations to speak across the country. I had a network of informants. A call and they could tell me whether a place was safe. It turned out that most of the places I was asked to speak were not on the safe list. It was five years before I was able to speak anywhere in the U.S. without worry.
